It is clear that the quantities of goods transported by road were by far highest, while the figure for pipeline was by far lowest during the research period.
In 1974, the levels of goods transported in the UK were biggest, at slightly more than 70 million tonnes, while the figures for water and rail were the same, at roughly 40 million tonnes. Meanwhile, there were nearly around 5 million tonnes of goods transported by pipeline.
In 2002, goods transported by road saw a dramatic increase of 30 million tonnes to approximately 100 million tonnes and became the highest figure in the line chart. There were significant rises to around 65 and 22 million tonnes in the quantities of good transported by water and pipeline respectively, whereas rail’s figure remained stable, at about 40 million tonnes from 1974 to 2002.
