A glance at the line graph provided illustrates some information about the changes in prices of three different food product groups in the USA during the period from 1978 to 2009.
Overall, it is clear that the prices for all three different food product groups increased over 30-year period, but only the increase in fresh fruits and vegetables is significantly higher than the rise in overall trend in consumer-price index throughout the period shown.
It can be seen from the graph that all lines have the same starting figure in 1979. The consumer-price index increase steadily from around 60 in 1979 to approximately 220 in 2009. Although the prices for sugar and sweets and carbonated drinks showed the similar trend in a term decline general, they were consistently below the consumer-price index after 1987. The price for sugar and sweets was 200 in 2009, higher than the final figure for carbonated drinks at the end of this period.
Prices also rose for the fresh fruits and vegetables, although it fluctuated. From the same number of 60 at the start of period, it increase sharply to more than 330 on the index in 2009.
