The graph below shows UK air pollutants in millions of tonnes, from three different sources, between 1990 and 2005.
The line chart compares the number of emissions released into the air from three different sources from 1990 to 2005.
Looking at the graph, it is immediately obvious that the industrial zones and households discharging pollutants to the environment decreased over the period shown, while the opposite was true for transport. Additionally, the sum number of air pollutants gradually declined year by year.
In 1990, a total of nearly 8 million tonnes of air contaminants were emitted from the three mentioned causes, with the largest figure belonging to the industry, at around 6 million tonnes. 2 million tonnes of pollutants remaining were divided equally for transport and households.
Over the fifteen years ensuing, a downward trend happened in the amount of emissions were produced by industry, only by about a third of the original. By contrast, the figures for transport and households stayed relatively unchanged during the first nine years. However, in the last six years, the quantity of air contaminants sending to the atmosphere from families fell to a negligible amount, whilst the reverse was true for transport, that increased to approximately 3 million tonnes. Due to decreasing more than increasing, so the whole of pollutants discharged into the air also went down to roughly 5 million tonnes.
