Internet users
The table and the bar chart present the number of internet users in 7 regions in 2000 and in 2010, as well as the internet penetration there. Overall, all the regions showed growth of different extent, while penetration is the highest in developed regions and lower in developing ones.
Looking first at the numbers of internet users, all the regions, except for Latin America (which only added two mln people by 2010), show considerable growth. Africa and the Middle East experience the highest growth (both of almost by 20 times). The number of Asian users also shows a raise, changing from 114 to 825 mln people, which constitutes almost half of all the users worldwide. The remaining three regions (Europe, North America, Oceania, and Australia) also show a raise, by three to four times.
Now moving on to internet penetration, North America has the highest rate (approximately 80 percent). Europe, Oceania, and Australia have the second-highest penetration, both reaching around 60 percent. Latin America, the Middle East and Asia’s rates vary from 35 to 22 percent. The lowest penetration was recorded in Africa (only 10 percent).
