The given line graph depicts the number of US-based violent offenses over the period of 22 years.
Overall, the violent crime rate experienced drastic changes in the final two decades of the 20th century. However, by the end of the century, there was a decrease in the total level of violent crime.
In 1978, the overall violent crime rate stood at 3.5 offenses per thousand Americans while around 2.3 victimisation-related cases were reported to police. The figure for recorded criminals accounted for under one thousand but only around 3 thousand offenses were handled in the US.
After a decade, the total rate of violent crime exploded to peak at 4.5 offenses before dipping by 1.5 to 3 thousand offenses in 2000. Although there was a slight fluctuation in victimisation’s stats initially, from 1988 onwards, its figures dwindled to just below 1.5 offenses. As for recorded crimes, the 22-year period saw a gradual surge in numbers with a peak by over 0.5 in 1994 to stand at around 1.5 offenses in the next 6 years. Except for a mild decline in 1988, the number of criminals arrested for committing crimes was more optimistic, which could be explained by its 2000 statistic.
