Number of marriages and divorces in the USA, 1970-2000
The first bar chart presents the number of marriages and divorces in the USA from 1970 to 2000. The second bar chart illustrates the marital status of adult Americans over the span of thirty years shown.
The population of people in marriage remained stable in 1970’s. A drop began in 1980. Since then, the number of marriages continued to go up steadily, from the 2.5 million people in 1980 to 2 million people only in 2000, a 0.5 million decrease. While the divorces fluctuated, a significant increase could be seen from 1970 to 1980, and it peaked in 1980, with 1.4 million people fell into this category. After that, it kept going down and reached to a lowest point in 2000.
From 1970 to 2000, people who are in marriages took up the majority of population. Increases could be seen in the proportion of adult Americans who never married and divorced. In 1970, divorced adults just occupied a mere 2% of adults, which was the lowest of all marital status. While in 2000, the widowed replaced the divorced to become the marital conditions with smallest population.
