The percentage of female members of parliament in European countries (2000 - 2012)
The line chart elucidates the percentage of women working in parliament in several European countries within 20 years.
In general, the proportion of females in parliament increased in all countries, with Italy making up the highest. A considerable gap was seen between the female percentage in the UK and Belgium’s parliament.
From 2000 to 2008, the figure for females working in Parliament in German and France increased by 3% and 4%, consecutively, while 5% rose was shown in Belgium's parliament. Italy's parliament showed a 10% increase in women politicians. Although the proportion of women in the British parliament jumped steeply by 10%, the figure remained the lowest eventually.
In the next four years, a moderate rose was seen in women in the German parliament by less than one in ten, while those in Italy jumped by 5%, surpassing those in German. While the figure in France and The UK showed an upward trend of 3% and 5%, respectively, women in Belgium's parliament dropped slightly by 5% at the end of the period.
