The chart gives information about the estimated number of people who were untaught in the world according to different regions and gender in 2000.
Overall, it can clearly be seen that there were more illiterate women than those of men in all areas, with the exception of Sub Saharan Africa where males were less educated than females. Besides that, South Asia had the highest illiteracy rates in women, whereas developed countries had the lowest ones.
Looking at the estimated percentage of people who were ignorant in developed countries, men stood at 2%, while women experienced 1% made. This proportion in Latin America and the Caribbean represented 10% in males and about 12% in females of the total. Next, the lack of education of men in East Asia and Oceania accounted for 8%, which was lower than that of women, at 20%.
Turning to the illiteracy rates in Sub Saharan Africa, the number of uneducated males was significantly higher than women. While unschooled females peaked at approximately 50%, this proportion in males was just 30%. In Arab States, this phenomenon was opposite to Sub Saharan Africa. There were more males who were educated than females, which accounted for 29% of illiterate males but more than 50% females ones. Men in South Asia who were illiterate accounted for just over 30% and women recorded about 56%, which was the highest.
