The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.
The pie chart illustrates the primary causes for land degradation all over the world; whereas the table shows the proportion of land afflicted by those reasons in three areas namely North America, Europe, and Oceania during the 1990s.
Overall, it is clear that land was degraded mostly by over-gazing. Additionally, Europe had the largest amount of land degraded between the three areas surveyed.
In terms of reasons for land degradation, over-grazing contributed 35%, followed by 30% of deforestation. The third motive was from over-cultivation, which accounted for 38%. Finally, only 7% of the land was destroyed by other factors.
Meanwhile, Europe had 23% of total land degraded in which nearly 10% of the figure was from deforestation. The proportion of land degradation in Oceania and North America was significantly low, just 13% and 5% respectively. However, overgrazing spoilt 11.3% of land in Oceania while over-cultivation destroyed the largest amount of land in North America, at 3.3%.
