In 1980, the main source energy generated in New Zealand was coal, at 56 units. The figure was double that of Germany, at 28 units. Natural gas and hydro had the same figure, at 30 units, while petroleum accounted for 11 units, in 1980, in New Zealand. In contrast, in Germany, the figures for natural gas, hydro, and petroleum were 28, 7, and 22 units. In addition, Germany had nuclear energy, accounting for 20 units.

In 2010, while the main source of energy generation in New Zealand was coal, at 150 units, nuclear was the highest energy generation in Germany, at 155 units.
