The pie charts give information about the water used for industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes in six major parts of the world.
It is noticeable that more water is consumed by industry than by agriculture or homes in North America and Europe. By contrast, agriculture accounts for the vast majority of water used in Africa, Central Asia, South East Asia and South America.
In North American and European countries, industrial water consumption accounts for 48% and 53% of total water usage. By contrast, merely less than 12% of the water used in Asian and African countries goes to industry. The opposite trend can be seen when we look at water consumption for agriculture. This accounts for more than 80% of water use in Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia, and 71% in South America, but only 32% and 39% of water usage in Europe and North America respectively.
Such dramatic differences are not seen when we compare the figures for domestic water use. More than 10% of water is used by household in American and European continents, while the figures for Asian and African regions are less than 10%.
