The given line graph illustrates how the elder population percentage in America, Sweden and Japan changed over a sixty-year period starting from 1940 with a forecast to 2040.
Overall, the proportion of elder residents in the three countries was prone to increase steadily. Besides, the rates reported in the USA and Sweden were nearly the same rise while the rate in Japan was dramatically lower at the same time.
Firstly, from 1940 to 1980, the elder population rates in the United States and Sweden both raised from 9% and 7% to 15% and 14% respectively. In the next 40 years, the American elders’ rates merely maintained stability while the Swedish rates continued surging up to 20 and then met a slight decline to 18% in 2020. After that, the two countries’ proportions are predicted to leap up to 23% and 25% in sequence in 2040.
Secondly, coming to Japanese elder population rates, it is obvious that from 1940 to 1980, the rate was decreased from 5% to 3% and remained unchanged until experienced a great jump to 10% in 2020. Surprisingly, the elder population in Japan is assumed to keep soaring to 27% in 2040, much higher compared to others countries. In other words, if there is no change in the near future, the Japanese population will be aged.
