The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999.

The table chart gives information about the proportion of people suffering a poor-standard of living from different types of families.
It is noticeable that levels of poverty were higher for single people than for couple, and people with children were more likely to be poor than those without. Poverty rate was considerably lower among elderly people.
There were 1,837,000 australian people living in poverty, occupied 11% total population.
The aged people were the least likely to be poor, with poverty levels of 6% for single aged people and 4% for aged couple. By contrast, the poverty proportion in singles and single parents are much higher, 19% and 21% respectively. Meanwhile, the rate for couple with children was only 12% but took 933,000 people, almost a half of total people living in poverty in Australia by the time 1999.
