The table compares UN’s data on four countries in terms of four social and economic indicators in 1994.

Overall, it can be seen that the data on Canada and Japan were much higher than those of Peru and Zaire. Moreover, the figures for the four indicators in Zaire were the lowest among the four countries.

In Canada, annual income per person was 11100 US dollars. The figure for Japan was considerably higher, at 15760. The life expectancies at birth of the two countries were almost the same, at 76 years and 78 years for Canada and Japan respectively. In terms of daily calorie supply per person, the figure for Canada was higher than that of Japan, at 3326 compared to 2846. Finally, the adult literacy rates in both countries were the same at 99%.

By contrast, all the data on Peru and Zaire were much lower than that on Canada and Japan. In terms of annual income per person, the figures for Peru and Zaire were 160 and 130 US dollars respectively, only about 1/100 of the figure for Japan. Life expectancies for both countries were around 50 years. Daily calorie supple per person in Peru was 1927, slightly higher than that of Zaire, whose figure was 1749. In Peru, about 68% of the adults were literate, two-third of the figure for Canada and Japan. Zaire had the lowest literacy rate of 34%.
