The table makes a comparison of the number of tourists in the UK and their average spending over the 5 years period from 2003 to 2008.
In general, the number of visitors in 2007 was higher than that of the remaining five years, while not only was the average spend per visit at the highest number in 2008, but the figure of all spending also showed the largest number in this year.
Looking first at visitor numbers, the first 4 years witnessed a moderate increase, from nearly 24.7 in 2003 to almost 32.7 in 2006. However, there was subsequently only a slight rise to around 32.8 in 2007. Interestingly, the number of tourists in the UK started showing a downward trend to 31.9 in 2008.
Moving to the average of total spending, 2003 to 2006 still witnessed an increment every year, from nearly 12 in 2003 to around 16 in 2006 before a decline from 2006 to 2007, to 15.96, but there was an increase after this year, to roughly 16.3 at the end of this period.
Looking at the average spend per visit, there were many fluctuations from the first year to 2005. The amount of money spent by each visitor went down, from 476 to 466 between 2003 and 2004. However, 2005 to 2008 witnessed an increase to 486 in 2007, only climbing by 1 billion in the next year and from 487 to 511 at the end of this time.
