Looking at the figures for coffee first, 5 countries spent no more than 3 million on coffee in 1999. Sales of this item in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden are 1.5, 3, 1.8, 1, 0.8, respectively. Five years later, apart from UK and Switzerland experiencing a significant rise to 20 and 6 million in coffee spending, the figure for the rest countries fluctuated from 1 to 2 million.
With regard to the consumption of bananas, people in the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden paid 25, 2, 0.6, 1.8, and 2 million for this item in 1999. Over the 5-year period from 1999 to 2004, while the amounts of bananas money in the UK went up to 47 million, the figure for Switzerland and Denmark climbed approximately sixfold, to 5.5 and 4 million, respectively. On the other hand, the spending on bananas in Belgium and Sweden remained relatively stable at under 1% in 2004
