The tables below give information about sales of fairtrade-labelled coffee and banana in 1999 and 2004 in five european countries.
The tables compare the expenditure in various countries in Europe on two Fairtrade products: Bananas and coffee between 1999 and 2004. The general trend gives an idea of increasing growing of Fairtrade-labelled products with UK and Switzerland being in the lead. Additional the fastest growth seems to have happened in the UK in the sale of fairtrade coffee.
Whereas the market in the UK have witnessed a larger growth of Fairtrade coffee, from 1.5 million euros to 20 millions, than the bananas which only increased nearly five folds from 1 million to 5.5 millions, fairtrade bananas in the market had a higher rise in Switzerland, doubling, and Belgium, rising to four folds of their 1999’s sales. Conversely Sweden markets showed a decline for 1.8 to 1 million in selling fairtrade bananas and hardly any difference in coffee sales. The case was practically similar in Denmark with bananas in 2004 making half the profit they made in 1999 and a negligible increase of 200,000 euros in coffee sales.
That shows that there is a variety of how well fairtrade is doing in the markets around Europe, although it is quite obvious that coffee is overall performing better than bananas.
