The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women who were overweight between the years 1980 and 2010.
In general, it is clear that the proportion of overweight Australians increased throughout the period. Additionally, the percentage of overweight men was generally higher than that of women.
In 1980, 40% of overweight men were observed in Australia. This figure subsequently witnessed a dramatic increase to nearly 50% after 10 years, before peaking at the highest point at approximately 65% by the year 2000. However, the proportion of overweight males then considerably reduced to 60% in 2000.
An opposite tendency can be observed in the figure for women. Particularly, the percentage of overweight women occupied just over 30% in 1980. The figure then experienced a significant increase and reached 50% by the year 2000, which remained nearly stable in 2010.
