Topic: The graph below shows the number of overseas visitors who came to the UK for different purposes between 1989 and 2009.

The graph illustrates how many foreign tourists traveled to the UK for three primary purposes, including holiday, business, and visits to friends or relatives from 1989 to 2009.

In general, it is apparent that foreign visitors came to the UK for the three main reasons undergoing a dramatic fluctuation in the examined period. Noticeably, it witnessed a positive rebounding trend in terms of taking a trip for a holiday to the UK at the end of the period, whereas the converse was true for the others.

Looking at the chart, the UK was one of the most promising destinations to attract overseas visitors, gaining popularity for them to have a holiday, standing at roughly 6.5 million of visitors in 1989. In the next 5 years, the figure continued to grow significantly until 1999 reaching the peak at approximately 9 million visitors before experiencing a considerable plummet in 2004. Surprisingly, after hitting the bottom, the number of foreign visitors coming for a holiday witnessed a drastic recovery to reach merely 9 million visitors in 2009.

Turning to the other purposes, while the number of tourists going on business in the UK was less than approximately 1 million in comparison with the figure for taking a holiday, tourists visiting their loved ones were only halving compared to the most popular purpose in 1989. Thereafter, the figure for visitors going on business underwent a sharp decrease to make up 4 million in 1994 before rising substantially again until 2004. In contrast, citizens spent more time visiting their friends and relatives, leading to the continual growth of standing at 6.5 million. Subsequently, both of them experienced a downward trend in maintaining their growth of around 6.5 million visitors at the end of the timeframe.
