Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)
Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.
You should write at least 150 words.
The line graph illustrates the inverse relationship between the production of acid in the mouth and PH value after consumption of different types of sweeteners in relation with time.
Overall, every kind of sweets starts to exert their effect immediately after consumption and gradually wanes off after a time period. While cane sugar has its acid production and hence PH reduction rate slightly faster and for longer duration, for honey it is lest and thus their action correlate harmful effects on teeth.
Given close look it can be seen that PH level of saliva shows a decline from 7 moment after eaten of cane sugar and exhibits sharp descend and after 5 minutes reaches to PH 3.5 which is favorable for tooth decay. This figure stays in the same tooth decay zone for about half an hour before hitting the safer PH rate of 5.5 and finally climbed to the initial value. However, the sugar from honey taking its troll slowly and, acid generation and teeth damage is also less. PH level from honey decreases about 2 point at 5 minutes and stays at the unsafe zone for only 5 minutes and finally goes back to 7 again after 30 minutes.
In regards to fruit sugar, it stands middle among three categories, reaches to about 4 at 5 minutes and remains in the decay area for 15 minutes before coming back to normal PH at the end.
