Task 1:
The diagram below shows the production of steam using a gas cooled nuclear reactor. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The illustration displays the role of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor in producing steam. Overall, the two most significant parts of the process are the reactor and the heat exchanger.
The reactor is a machine consisting of uranium fuel elements and graphite moderators through which the gas is passed. Amidst these are eight identical boron control rods, pairs of which are inside the first three moderators. The inner border of the cylindrical part of the reactor parallel to the moderators is made up of a pressure vessel, around which is a frame-like boundary of concrete radiation shielding. Part of this shielding covering the rods consists of charge tubes for loading fuel elements.
A pipe from the reactor reaches the heat exchanger on the right side between the hot and cold gas duct. In the heat exchanger, water from the lower end enters a curved tube and passes a water circulator, and steam moves out from the turbo alternator at the upper end. The gas from the reactor flows to the hot gas duct and eventually reaches the cool gas duct. Then, the gas crosses the gas blower and then re-enters the reactor to repeat the process again.
