Recent figures show an increase in violent crime among youngsters under the age of 18. Some psychologists claim that the basic reason for this is that children these days are not getting the social and emotional learning they need from parents and teachers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that an inclination toward underage crimes is caused by the insufficient social and emotional skills taught by parents and teachers. However, some violence is also influenced by children's social circle.
Some criminals done by youngsters aged 18 and under are sometimes found as they do not receive social and emotional knowledge from their guardians. This is because some parents and teachers are prone to focus on academic records only, resulting in children having a lack of moral understanding. According to a study conducted by the Harvard School of Education, 70% of underage criminals in Manhattan, NYC was found to have good grades. However, another reason was found that they had strict parents who always pushed them to get good grades no matter what.
On the other hand, underaged violence is also influenced by children's social peers. This is caused by the sense of entitlement on them to feel belonged, so that they will do anything in order to fit in with their peers, including doing the bad acts. For instance, more than 50% of bullies in Cleveland Highschool admitted that they bullied their friends because they want to be invited to consider the most exclusive groups at school. In order to achieve that goal, the children needed to copy the member of the groups which mostly liked to bully others.
In all, even though some children criminals are caused by the inability of parents and teachers to cultivate morals on the pupils' mindset, however, some crimes were also caused by external factors such as a social circle. It is better for guardians to always cultivate good values in their children.
