Some experts suppose that when a country is already rich, any additional increase in economic wealth does not make its citizens happier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is widely believed that becoming wealthier is not intertwined with higher levels of contentment. From my perspective, I totally agree with this statement for the following reasons.
One compelling reason to support this argument may stem from individuals’ concerns about health issues. Specifically, the rapid pace of globalization has led to the transmission of numerous unknown diseases, which may pose severe threats to human health. For instance, the pandemic of COVID-19 was perceived to originate from Wuhan city, China, which subsequently infected millions of global citizens due to global travel. During this pandemic, most individuals worldwide laid substantial emphasis on their survival over financial status, which significantly reduced their happiness. Consequently, it is inevitable that wealth may not translate into satisfaction when considering health issues.
Another reason for the gap between additional wealth and happiness is a lack of entertainment. Admittedly, if people are passionate about enhancing their wealth, they have to make considerable efforts to achieve their goal. Obviously, the desire to become richer may squander much of people’s time, which prevents them from relaxation. Thus, inadequate resting time may result in prolonged stress and depression, which may reduce people’s happiness. For example, many Hanoians residing in affluent areas have reported experiencing mental health issues due to a lack of social gatherings and family reunions.
In conclusion, while some argue that being richer may stimulate the brain to produce dopamine to increase happiness, I disagree with this viewpoint. This is because additional richness may minimize time for entertaining activities, potentially exacerbating mental health issues. Consequently, these individuals may face considerable uncertainties regarding their health, leading to a decline in pleasure and contentment.
