Some people say that drug companies have a responsibility to spend money on researching medicines that will help people in poorer countries. Others say the main responsibility of drug companies is to make money. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
There are contrasting opinions about whether drug companies should prioritize researching medicines to assist people in impoverished countries or focus solely on profit. In my opinion, although earning money is the fundamental objective of every drug company, we should not overlook the main purpose of establishing a pharmaceutical company, which is to aid people, especially patients in poor areas.
On the one hand, some people believe that drug companies should mainly generate money for these reasons. First, when a company specializing in drug research earns sufficient financial resources, it can fund its upcoming projects, such as developing vaccines for emerging contagious diseases. For instance, Pfizer was able to finance its Covid-19 vaccine experiments and trials to help worldwide citizens, which a small company cannot afford to do. Moreover, a profitable drug company has more opportunities to export its medicine to the world and it brings transportation taxes to the country’s economy. Therefore, some people might support the idea of drug companies’ responsibility to focus on profit.
On the other hand, I believe that drug companies shoulder the responsibility of researching medicines to aid people, especially in poorer countries as they are created to save lives rather than making money. Drug companies should spend money on creating medicines affordable to poor patients to save more lives. The reason is that drug companies exist primarily to better healthcare for all individuals, thus they need to invest on creating effective medicines approachable to many people, especially in poor countries where medical infrastructure remains insufficient. Furthermore, funding drug research represents an essential obligation embedded in every drug company's mission - ensuring their existence in the pharmaceutical industry through the distribution of medicine aiming at improving people's health.
In conclusion, opinions regarding drug companies’ primary responsibility vary among people. However, I believe that drug companies fulfil their purpose to help people’s health by inventing and distributing reasonably priced, effective medication sinstead of utilizing drugs for money.
