The reading passage claims that there are several explanations about what might have been the cause of the strange sounds which Russian submarines had been hearing for two decades. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas implausible and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading holds the view that the sounds were made by male and female ocraorca whales. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that this theory is highly unlikely. Although there were a population of ocraorca whales living in that area, they lived near the surface of the water. Since the Russian submarinssubmarines were patrolling deep in the ocean, they should not be able to hear their noises. In addition, the ocraorca whales can be detected by sonar which is another reason making this theory impossible.
Second, the author argues that the sounds were made by giant squids which could not be detected by sonar because of their soft bodies. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the fact that although this theory is a better candidate for explaining the cause of the odd sounds, it is unconvincing. The sailors first heard the sounds in the 1960s and they were hearing the sounds for two decades. After two decades, in 1980s, the sounds were disappeared. Actually, giant squids lived in the area in that time and continue to live there today and there is no reason for the sounds to stop in the 1980s.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that the cause of the sounds were military submarines of another country. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that the sounds changed direction very quickly and no engine noise were was detected. Even today submarines make engine noise and they are not that fast. Due to these two reasons, the explanation of another country's submarine cannot hold up.
