The lecture is mainly discussing the lines in the Sinosauropteryx fossil represent feathers, challenging the opposing views mentioned in the reading passage.
Firstly, it is said in the reading that the fine lines may be result of skin fibers’ decomposition but not feathers. In contrast, the professor thinks that it cannot be remains of skin fibers because we don’t see any such decomposition in the fossils of other animals buried at the same site. Moreover, she indicates that fossils of many other animals buried at the site show evidence that their functional skin structures have been beautifully preserved in volcanic ash. Thus, the Sinosauropteryx’s feathers can also be preserved as lines in fossils.
Secondly, the reading passage claims that the fine lines are more likely to be fossilized remains of frills than remains of feathers. However, the professor holds an opposite opinion. She claims that the fine lines in Sinosauropteryx's fossil cannot be frills because they contain certain protein. In other words, the Sinosauropteryx structures did contain certain protein that can only be detected in these fine lines but not in the frills.
Finally, the reading believes that the lines do not represent feathers because they were located along the backbone and the tail of the animal, so they seemed useless. But the professor disagrees with it by pointing out that the lines can represent feathers because one of other birds also has feathers on its tail. In fact, the colorful feathers of this bird are displayed to attract mates. Since Sinosauropteryx's fine lines are also colorful, they can represent feathers that this dinosaur used for display.
