4-Day Workweek
The reading claims that converting 5-day workweek to 4-day workweek with 10 hour work time instead of 8 hour offers benefits to both businesses and employees. However, the lecturer finds all ideas dubious and present some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that this conversion will lower expanses of employees. For example they have to drive to work only 4-day. And they can save the money they would have to pay for 1 more day to get to their work. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although this argument seems to be true, the reduction on the expanses is not adequate. By working 4-day in a week saving for gas is like 850 dollars for each month which is not enough.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that operating costs of most businesses will be reduced as well. Also employees have more energy to work since they had 3 days off. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that by converting 5-day workweek to 4-day, businesses will lose 20 percent of their potential costumers. They are working 2 extra hour in each day but the fact is that they are working in the evening when the most of the customers are gone. So this save can not be justified.
Finally, the reading passage holds the view that this conversion can bring 1 more day for employees to be with their family. They can spend time with their children and back to work happier. In contrast, the speaker dismissed this issue due to the fact that if employees have young children they have to find a place like kindergarden which works up to evening which is hard to fine according to the speaker. Also if employees have old enough children to go to the school, one more day is not helpful since they are in school at the time their parents are in home.
