about Agnostids
The main topic of both the passage and the lecture is about Agnostids that were extinct 450 million years ago and just some fossils remained. The passage claim that there are three theories about how Agnostids may have been lived. The professor on the other hand, completely denies whatever mentioned in the passage through citing several reasons.
First, both the passage and the lecture talk about Agnostids as swimming predators. According to the passage, Agnostids may have been swimming predators that hunted smaller animals. Because it is known that there are other types of arthropods were strong swimmers and active predators; as a result, Agnostids can be swimming predators too. However, the professor refutes this, stating that they can not be swimming predators because vision is so essential for predators so they can see and catch the prey. But as we know, Agnostids did not have good vision and maybe they were blind, plus they did not have other strong sense so that they can follow the preys.
Second, both the author and professor discuss Agnostids as seafloor dwellers. The author argues that Agnostids may have dwelled on the seafloor. Again there are some examples of other types of primitive anthropods living in this way; consequently, Agnostids can be lived like them too. In contrast, the professor points out that seafloor dwellers could not move fast and contribute in other places. Because they are so slow, as a result, there were some seafloor dwellers species that there were not in any other sites. But Agnostids were found in so many diffrent areas which means they were fast and they were not seafloor dwellers.
Lastly, both lecture and professor address the subject of Agnostids as parasites. The lecture goes on and mentions that there is a possibility that Agnostids were parasites, living on and feeding off larger animals. Because there are many parasites species of modern-day anthropods, so Agnostids could be like them. Nevertheless, the professor supports a contradictory view as compared to that of the passage; he describes that they could not be parasites. Because the parasites population always were limited, there were not so many of them. But Agnostids had a huge population, so they could not be parasites.
