Are meerkat sentinels and altrustics human act truly selfless?

It is claimed in a passage that the word altruism is commonly associated with selflessness, because it seems that individuals would gain nothing from acts that is deemed altruistic. However, according to a lecture, a closer look at this issue may help people understand that altruism may not be so selfless.
Meerkat sentinels would easily be considered the Good Samaritans for their seemingly selfless guard duty, but further investigation shows that they actually gain a lot from this so-called altruistic act. First of all, it was once believed that the sentinels will look out for potential threats, such as predators, on an empty stomach, while other pack members are foraging. In fact, a recent study of meerkat eating habits mentioned in the lecture proves that the sentinels usually eat before they perform their duty. Therefore, one of the perks of volunteering to be a sentinel can be the privilege to eat first.
Another benefit is the increased chance of survival. The passage claims that sentinels risk their lives protecting others, but the truth is they are much safer. When sentinels spot a predator and send off the alert, they can easily escape into a nearby burrow, leaving others out in the open facing graver danger. Moreover, alarmed by imminent hazards, the remaining meerkats’ movement caused by their survival instinct may even draw the attention of the predators away from the sentinel.
The selflessness of altruistic human acts is also questionable. Although those who share food or donate organs gain little for themselves, the lecture interprets this problem in a different way. It states that societal appreciation and self-worthiness can also drive people to sacrifice their own interests. Some would consider these non-material rewards even more valuable than material ones.
