Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
This material addresses the question of whether or not building colonies on
asteroids is a good Idea. The reading passage suggests that it is a better option
then, for instance, the planet Mars or Earth's moon due to several reasons like
low gravity, some of them are reach with valuable elements, also, some asteroids
are very close to earth, so, it would be easy to arrive. The lecturer, on the other
hand, refutes this information by stating that there is a risk for health of
astronauts, costs will reduce the profit of materials and it is utterly tough to
return from asteroids to earth.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that due to the size of asteroids,
they have lower gravity compared with planets and moons, which would be
beneficial because spacecrafts could carry much more equipment, additionally
the landing of a spaceship would be more shieldied. Meanwhile, the professor
casts doubt on this and argues that despite the accesablness of asteroids, lower
gravity is a big risk for astronauts. It will affect the muscle mass and bones
denxity, which, of course, will cause heath problems.
In addition, the article posits that some asteroids is worthy to consider as a
colony, due to their reachness of materials like metals which are founded in
earth only once in a blue moon, also the trip would worth the cost. However, the
professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details.
Namely, she mentions that the price of spacecrafts, equipments and spaceships
would be huge and would totally reduce the profits.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that it is much uncomplicated to
make it to asteroid than to other objects. In specific time, some asteroids come
very close to the Earth, which make them acessable. This goes counter to the
information in the listening passage according to which asteroids are always in
unusual movement, consequently it can be impossible for spaceships to came
back to Earth. The distance after arrival can increase dramatically.
