birds injures from glasses
The reading and lecturer both are about birds. They cannot distinguish between glass and air, so they often injured by glass on buildings. The author suggests the three possible solutions to prevent the injuries. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in lecture. He says that none of the solution prevent the birds from harmed.
First of all, the author claims that replace the regular clear glass with one way glass. Person from inside can see outside, but birds cannot see through window. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He thinks that birds can see reflecting light from the glass. Furthermore, he points out that if bids see reflection of sky or tree, then they understand that it is sky or tree. Birds are try to go toward those glasses, and eventually they harmed.
Secondly, the author states that colorful strips on the glass prevent the birds too see through glass, because they would see the lines and try to avoid them. The lecturer rebuts this point by asserting that through the opening in design people could see the outside, but birds understand it as a hole , and they try to fly into that. He elaborates on this by mentioning that if glass are painted by too much colorful paintings or lines, then rooms become too dark. Thus, this is not a appropriate solution.
Thirdly, the author mentions that a building in a bird flight path can be equipped with powerful electromagnets that emit magnetic signals that steer birds in a direction away from the building. The lecture on the other hand, states that this is useful for the those who travel long distance not for those who travel short distance.
