extinction of living organisms in end of Triassic period
The reading and the lecture are both about how the extinction of living species in end of Triassic period 200 million year ago. The author of reading gives possible theory to explain the cause of extinction. The lecturer casts doubt on the theory made in the article. She thinks that these all are not good explanation for this.
First of all, the author claims that coastal and shallow-ocean species destroyed due to inclination of sea levels, and it led to the effect of food chain worldwide. This point is challenged by lecturer. She says that it is true That much extinction could not happen suddenly after changing in sea level. Additionally, coastal are able to survive on that climate because of having such adaptation.
Secondly, the author states that because of volcanic activity, Sulfur Dioxide was released because of volcanic activities over there, which caused the lowering the temperature, and led to extinctions. The lecturer refutes this point by asserting that sulfur dioxide is still present in atmosphere due to volcanic activities Generally, sulfur dioxide combine with ocean water and fall on earth as rain. So, it is not true that much amount of sulfur dioxide can led to this much extinctions.
Thirdly, the author mentions that asteroids had strikes on earth, and it led to displaced debris thrown up into the atmosphere, where it had block out the sunlight for several months. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that scientists had found hit asteroid on earth long before end of the Triassic period. They have dated the time, so it can be said that extinctions did not occurred due to asteroid activities.
