broccoli
The article and the lecture are both about benefits of cultivating broccoli in the east coast. The author of the reading presents three reasons about benefits of producing a new type of broccoli in the East Coast. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. Her position is that production of a new type of broccoli might not be as good as its creators claim.
According to the reading, the new broccoli can withstand hot summers thus it can be produced in the east coast. This will reduce transportation costs of it and as a result, finished price of this new broccoli is less than the other produces in the west Coast. The lecturer challenges this specific argument. She claims that the newly produced broccoli is not necessarily cheaper that the ones produced by the West Coast. That’s because although the transportation cost is reduced, the new broccoli has lower yield which means there are less broccoli produced per hectare. therefore, the benefits of lower transportation costs won’t lower the price.
Secondly, the author suggests that the new type of broccoli is not genetically modified but rather was created by traditional techniques. The lecturer however asserts that since the companies that are funding this new product are the same ones that produce genetically modified crops, people are suspicious of them and won't buy them as much as the reading suggests.
Finally, the author posits that the new type of broccoli has more nutrients that the old one. In contrast the lecturer's stance is that, this is not a good argument. She notes that there are already other types of vegetables that are produced in the East Coast which have the same amount of nutrients that broccoli does. So, it’s much cheaper to educate people about using them than it is to produce a new type of broccoli.
