Chevaleir memoir
The reading and lecture are both about the accuracy of the Chevalier's memoir. The author of the reading provides three theories about why the memoir is not accurate. The lecturer disputes the argument made in the article. His position is that the memoir is valid and accurate.
According to the reading, Chevalier might have taken loan from a swiss merchant. The article mentions that due to the loan he could spend a lot of money on parties and gambling. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that taking loan doesn't mean that a person is poor. Additionally, he point out that Chevelier had a lot of assets and was rich so with that he was able to spend a lot of money. But, when the money was fully spent he would take loan from the merchant because it would take time to convert assets to money.
Secondly, the author suggests that it is not possible to properly document the conversion between Chevalier and Voltaire. In the article, it is said that since the conversion was done many years ago and it's impossible to accurately present it in the memoir. The lecturer, however, asserts that Chevalier always maintained a book where he noted down the conversion every day. He goes on to say that chevalier's friends the witnesses also confirmed that he maintained a journal.
Finally, the author positions that Chevelier's great escape through a metal piece from Italy is not at all possible. The author contends that it was all made up to get people excited while reading. He feels that he might have bribed the officials. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that the other prisoners had better friends who had political influence when compared to Chevelier but they couldn't be released. He notes that the old venetian documents had a record where it is mentioned that a sealing was done to the Chevelier's prison after he escaped.
