The Chevalier de Seingalt
The reading and the lecture discuss whether the memoir written by the Chevalier de Seingalt was accurate enough, but they have contradicting views. While the reading suggests that the events described in memoir were not true, the lecture opposes this claim
First, the reading states that the Chevalier borrowed large amount of money from a Swiss merchant; an act that is not usual among the wealthy people. The lecture, on the other hand, contradicts this idea by suggesting that taking a loan does not mean he was poor; he took the loan because his assets: lands, buildings required time to turn into cash, or in other words were not very liquid.
Second, another skeptical point that the reading makes is about the accuracy of his conversations with the famous writer Voltier. The passage raises this because the memoir was written many years after these meetings happened. The lecture, however, refutes this statement by saying that the Chevalier used to write every night everything that he could remember from what Voltier said earlier during that day. Moreover, several witnesses had confirmed that the Chevailer used to look at these notes, while writing the book.
Third, the reading also suggests that the way he described his escape from prison, by making hole in the ceiling of his cell with a metal, looks rather fictional; what he really did was bribing the guards. The lecture, on the contrary, opposes this by saying that he actually escaped prison through ceiling because even more important people could not bribe their way out of prison. It backs this argument by saying that the Venetian government at that time released reports about how they needed to fix the ceiling in the cell where the Chevalier was imprisoned.
Overall, the issue about the trustworthiness of the memoir remains open to debate due to the fact that it happened a long time ago and there is no secure way to prove it.
