Coal ash
The power companies assert that using liner for protecting from leaking coal lash to the environment cause some problems. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas discussed by the companies dubious and suggests some evidence to refute them all.
First, the power companies claim that according to the existed regulation, they should use special liner-material to prevent leaking coal ash components to the environment. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this idea due to the fact that current regulation is not sufficient because it forces companies to use liner only when they build new ponds or landfills. However, for preserving the environment companies should add liner to the old ponds and landfills.
Furthermore, the companies assert that by providing strict regulation for storing and handling coal ash, cause that consumers stop using products which are created from recycling coal ash because they will think that these products are dangerous. Conversely, the speaker underlines the fact that the new regulation will not reduce the demand for recycled products. Other experiences about other harmful materials such as mercury have shown that people buy products that produced from recycled materials with strict regulations.
Finally, the power companies believe that the new regulation could increase consumers' electricity prices due to the rise in companies' expenses from adding new liners. The lecturer, on the other hand, makes the arguments that despite using liners by companies adds extra cost to the electricity generation process, it increases consumers' electricity price only one percent which is a minuscule amount for consumers.
