comics

comics

The reading and the lecture are both about comic medium which is influenced by American art. The author of the reading believes that the comic medium is uniquely American art form. On the other hand The lecture cast doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that comic books, comic strips are not commonly influenced by American art.

First of all, the author points out that Hogan’s Alley was the first successful and popular comic strip in the 1890s with the character Yellow Kid. Plus it mentions that the publisher Joseph .P and William .R were two famous influential Americans publishers.
At this point challenge by the lecture. He says that Hogan's Alley 1890s comic strip was not the first popular cartoon character. In fact, in the 1790s there were popular comic strips in Britain and Switzerland.
Furthermore he argues that Joseph.P was an immigrant of Hungary.

Secondly the author contends that the first popular action comicbook was Superman in the 1890s. Subsequently the article exposes that the American have exported their art form to the rest of the world, such as Japan in mangas and European comics.
The lecture rebouts the argument. He suggests that in Belgium in 1922 the comic Tintin was published and is still internationally popular even more than Superman.
Next he elaborates that Japanese comics known as manga are pure Asian art influence. On the other side European comics such as the Smurf or Disney are created by European comics artists.

Finally the author states that comic medium started in America. The article established that is undeniable and truly American art form.
The lecture, on the other hand, posits that, comic medium is not uniquely American. He puts forth the idea that it belongs to the whole world.
