As early as the twelfth century A D the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their great houses massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high Archaeologist

The reading and the lecture are both about the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. The ambiguity is about the usage of buildings. The author of the reading presented three theories. The lecturer casts doubt on all the main points presented in the reading using three examples.

Preeminently, according to the reading, the building were used for purely residential purpose because of their large size. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He claims that there aren't enough fireplaces in the house for cooking. In addition, he also points out that even in large houses there were fireplaces only sufficient for ten families but enough rooms for hundred families.

By the same token, the reading states that large houses were used for storing grain maize. To support it, the author points out the long lasting nature of the food and thus, a need for proper storage which could be successfully fulfilled by these large houses. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He asserts that during excavation there have been no evidence of spilled maize, neither there have been any trace of big containers which were used for storing.

In winding up, the reading contends that the large houses could be used for ceremonial purposes excavation found out there were remains of large number of broken pots. The author elaborates that there could be large people gathering where they ate festive meal and discarded the pots.
In contrast, the lecturer's stance is large quantities of various materials have been found such as sand, stone and construction material. He also elucidates that remains of pots might have just been a regular trash. Hence, nothing definite can be concluded.
