Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet was in fact painted by Rembrandt

Essay topics:

Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet was in fact painted by Rembrandt

In contrast with the reading passage, the lecturer states that the painting known as the Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet was in fact painted by Rembrandt. The teacher gives three reasons to support this claim.
First of all, she answers to the fur collar issue. According to the passage, that detail would be inconsistent with the rest of the painting because the woman in it dresses an outfit that would only be weared by a servant, hence she wouldn't be able to afford such an expensive item. The lecturer, however, argues that new scientific evidence suggests that the fur collar was painted many years after the original painting.
Closely linked with that discovery is the fact that the dark fur collar actually covered a light colored piece of clothe, which would reflect light on the woman's face. That explains the shadowing problem mentioned in the passage.
Last but not least, the teacher explains that several wood pieces were added in order to enlarge the original painting. That refutes the passage's argument that excludes this painting because Rembrandt has never glued together a panel in any of his paintings. In addition, new research has shown that the piece of wood used in the original painting is the same kind used in the Rembrandt's self portrait.
To sum up, the lecturer offers explanations to all the problems brought up by the reading passage, from the woman's clothes and the shadows to the wood panel.
