Endothermic Dinosaurs
Both the reading article and lecture debates about the endothermic characteristics-- animals feature that keep the temperature of the body unchanged in any conditions--of dinosaurs. Whilst the reading passage claims that the dinosaurs are endotherms grounding on the three specific reasons, the lecturer challenges each of the propositions made by author for several reasons.
The author, in the reading article, begins by mentioning that the fossils of dinosaurs was discovered on the polar regions where they must have maintained the temperature as per the surrounding one; however, the speaker refutes the position of the author by stating that the polar regions during the warm conditions were warm enough to sustain the lives of animals like dinosaurs. Meanwhile, during the cold conditions, it is highly probable that the dinosaurs might have migrated to the other places or underwent hibernation as other reptiles often do during those conditions.
The writer further asserts that position of the legs in the endotherms allows various physical activity as running which tends to be underneath the body as of dinosaurs. The lecturer questions the writers argument by stating that not only dinosaurs were not the high energy animals to carry out the activities such as running, but also the legs underneath the body supports other things too. Continuing to it, she adds that the legs provided underneath the body helps the dinosaurs to supports its larger body weight.
Finally, the reading article posits that bones of the endotherms were highly enriched with the Haversian canals ( canals which support the rapid body growth) which was abundantly seen in the fossils of the dinosaurs too. As opposed to the articles opinion, the lecturer maintains that there was the presence of the growth rings in the bones of dinosaurs which implies the thickening of the bone ultimately signifying no rapid growth. On top of that, she further adds that there was inconsistency observed in the growth patterns of the dinosaurs which was not the common traits of the perfect endotherms.
To summarize, the writer and lecturer holds the opposite views on the endothermic characteristics of the dinosaurs which makes difficult for both of them in finding the common ground.
