The lecturer disputes the idea that the European silver coins discovered in the state of main in Canada were not original. He asserts that there are several reasons to make us believe that the coins were indeed original and have been brought from Europe by the Norse.
First, Archaeologists were able to discover other valuable historic peaces in the same location. The author claims that these coins were discovered far away from where the Norse have lived, this make us believe that they are not genuine. However, the lecturer states that there were other historic objects discovered in the same place. Moreover, the Norse did not stay in one location but they were travelling from one place to another. Therefore, finding them in far away places does not mean that they are not original.
Second, the lecturer suggests that the Norse use to take all their belongings when they traveled back to Europe. The author claims that since no other coins were found in the same location, that means that they are fake. On the other hand, the lecturer contends that the Norse settlers did not stay in North America all the time. He states that they use to go back to Europe and they use to collect all their things before they travel.
Finally, the lecturer argues that Native American would consider these coins as something valuable even though they cannot use them as money. The lecturer acknowledges that Native American are ignorant and know nothing about what was going in Europe at that time, however, he states that the native Americans might use these coins as nickles since they are beautiful peaces .Therefore, the Norse were sure that they will be able to trade them with the native American in return with something else.
