Little Ice Age
The article provides few possible theories that explain occurrence of phenomenon called the Little Ice Age that lasted from 14th to 20th century, where there were unusual low temperatures everywhere around the world. Nonetheless, the speaker opposes these theories, by claiming that the information is out-of-date.
First theory suggests melting glaciers as the main cause of cooling freshwater in the Gulf Stream, one of the largest ocean currents. As it is known, temperature in the Gulf Stream has a huge impact on Earth's climate in general. However, the lecturer contradicts this statement. He assumes that stream could've only affected such regions as Europe or North America. This theory does not explain lowered climate in the Southern hemisphere.
Secondly, the author talks about volcanic eruptions that usually result in dark clouds of dust and some other gases being released in the atmosphere. Those obstructed sunlight from reaching the Earth surface. On the other hand, the speaker believes that this kind of geological events would be visible for ordinary people. Yet, there are no such records remained.
Finally, due to numerous diseases and unfavorable living conditions human population rapidly decreased. Consequently, there was no demand for deforestation. Trees absorbed carbon dioxide, reducing the greenhouse effect. Albeit, the lecturer supposes that this would not be able to create such a tremendous long-term effect of global cooling.
