The little ice age was a period of unusually cold temperature in many parts of the world that lasted from about the year 1350 until 1900CE. There were unusually harsh winters, and glaciers grew larger in many areas. Scientist have long wondered what caused the Little Ice Age. Several possible causes have been proposed.
Both the reading and the lecture try to discuss how the Little Ice Age caused dramatically harsh winters and produced large amounts of glaciers in many parts of the world. The reading passage claims that scientists believe that it is likely to be three definite proofs that led to the Little Ice Age. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas mentioned by the reading unconvincing and presents some evidence to refute each of them.
Firstly, the author argues that a large amount of Gulf Stream current has been led to noticeable cooling weather and the Little Ice Age afterward. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that this reason is highly questionable due to the fact that these huge currents originating from Gulf Stream only affects Europe and North America's climate. It also affects the southern area of Africa. Hence, Gulf Stream currents can not affect all Earth's climate.
Additionally, the article holds the view that the Little Ice Age has been caused by distributing large amounts of dust and sulfur gases from volcanic activities into Eath's atmosphere; therefore, released gases into the atmosphere prevents some sunlight from approaching the surface of Earth. On the contrary, the professor underlies the fact that even though it is highly approved that volcanic eruption puts enough dust and sulfur gas into the atmosphere, but it also produced visual effects such as colorful sunsets that not have been before. As a result, the speaker believes that according to the deficient in strong and effective evidence, it can not be concluded that the volcanic eruptions have been led to the little ice age has.
Finally, the passage states that due to the decline of human populations, forests grew dramatically and then Earth would be cooler because of consuming more carbon dioxide by forest trees. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that although the decrease in the human population results in removing carbon dioxide, there was not enough time to affect the world's climate and resulted in the Little Ice Age. After that, forest trees soon became cut down to provide food for the growing populations; therefore carbon dioxide gases were recovered and released to the atmosphere. So, with more carbon dioxide into the Earth atmosphere, earth bacame warmer not cooler.
