Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible.
The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of human to live permanently on other planets than the earth, specifically on Venus. While the author of the reading states that the conditions there are not supportive of permanent residence, the lecturer challenges every argument made by the reading.
To begin with, the author argues that the pressure at Venus' surface is much higher than the pressure on the earth. The article mentions that damage would take place for any people who will land on Venus. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He suggests that establishing a floating station would resolve the problem. In fact, he agrees with the author that the pressure on Venus is impossible for humans to tolerate, but he says that a station 50 kilometers above the surface would overcome this dilemma. In fact, he states that the pressure in this height is equal to the pressure on the earth.
Secondly, the writer states that there are not water resources available on Venus' surface. The lecture, however, rebuts this by mentioning that a chemical process between the various elements of Venus' atmosphere, such as nitrogen and carbon, would produce a sufficient amount of water there. Therefore, no need for importing water from the earth.
Finally, the author posits that a very little amount of sunlight would be able to reach Venus' surface. This is because of the the thick clouds that present in Venus' atmosphere. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that not all of the clouds are thick and prevent sunlight to be utilized, he says that clouds above 50 kilometers are thin, thus sunlight could be used. Moreover, he thinks that, also, the reflected sunlight could be used to generate enough electricity for people's needs.
