n an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as "ecocertified." Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive ecocertification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.
The reading and lecture are both about encouragement of ecologically sustainable practices. Whereas author of the reading states it is unlikely that united states will do same that other companies are doing. The lecture present the point in contrasting reading .The lecture cast doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing two/three reasons.
First of all, according the reading, american are exposed to so much advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the eco certification label. However, the lecture disputes this point. he say that in united states, consumers have distinct view for every advertisement. In addition, he states that some consumers are still concern about advertisement. Furthermore, he states that americans have lot of concern regarding ecological certification and regarding independent recognition.
Secondly, the reading states that ecocertified wood will be more expensive compared to certified wood and americans consumers are tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified companies. Nevertheless, the lecture states that who do not concern about money, every one concern about money. In addition, he points out that people of americans are only concerned when there is same product available for lower price as well as higher price are available and moreover, americans are protective about ecology.
Finally, the reading claims that american wood businesses sell most of their products in the united states, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise therefore pursuing certification would make sense for american wood companies. On the other hand, the lecture believe that americans are concerned about foreign competitors and therefore he thinks that americans will also show interest in issuing ecocertification.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about t encouragement of ecologically sustainable practices. The two/three points made in reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
