Pluto as a planet
Both the reading and the lecture are about pluto being a planet or not. In this set of materials, the writer strongly postulates that Pluto is not a planet and provides three reasons to prove it. However, the professor states that many scientists do not agree that pluto is not a planet and gainsays each of the arguments mentioned in the reading by considering them weak.
First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting that pluto cannot be considered a planet for its small size. Its mass is similar and even smaller to that of other dwarf planets, for instance, Eris. On the other hand, the professor explains that the size of pluto is not that small. If it is compared with other dwarf planets it is the largest and although the dwarfs are not many in number. He further points out that the criteria to classify the planets based on their size is illogical. He gave an example of mammals to illustrate this. He describes a blue whale and a small rat are classified into the same category as mammals. Thus, the classification according to the size does not make sense.
Next, the professor further goes into details by mentioning that pluto cannot be opt-out of the planets category if there are other objects in it's orbit. The scattering parameter has an effect on the size of the planet. He gave an example of stars to explain this. He states if there is a giant star and a small one, the scattering parameter of the small star will be less so we cannot blame pluto for its small size. These claims refute the writer's implication about the orbit of pluto having objects in its path. Thus, it cannot be considered a planet.
Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring that the pluto has qualities of a comet rather than a planet. Not only, it is composed of ice so a tail will appear close to the sun but also the orbital shape is irregular. Therefore, it does not resemble a planet. In contrast, the speaker refutes this proof by showing the inaccuracy of the author that it is completely false. Pluto has its own atmosphere which is composed of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. The presence of these gases shows the availability of the gravitational pull. Also, pluto has five moons and rocky mountains. These features are not present in comet. Hence, pluto doesn not be categorized as comet.
