Question: The golden frog. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage
The golden frog is an amphibian that lives in and mountain streams in Panama and the specie is endangered because of a fungal infection. According to the passage, there are several possible solutions to prevent the frog specie from this infection. The speaker however stated that, none of the solution are very helpful and stated that the points mentioned in the passage are not convincing.
First, passage stated that frog disease could be prevented by introducing a type of bacterium in the frog's skin. The lecturer claimed that this bacterium did have positive effects but it would not stay last very long. This special bacterium attacks fungus only in the earlier phase of colonization when introduced into a frog's skin by releasing special chemical. After that this bacterium stop producing this chemical so, the frog would no longer be protected. Therefore, introducing the bacterial colony would not prevent the frogs against the infection.
In addition, according to the passage breeding the golden frog in captivity and then release into a wild would give rise to healthy population. Nonetheless, speaker stated that this might not help the frog to stay disease free. This is because there are other wild animals that carry same disease and when the frog come in contact with these animals, soon they would catch the disease.
Finally, passage mentioned that if the golden frogs population developed a natural defense, it would prevent them from fungal infection. The speaker on the other hand asserted that, this natural defense in which frog raises it internal temperature have drawbacks. The frogs when raises body temperature it uses plenty of energy. The expenditure of this energy weakens the frog and they are more prone to catch diseases. Hence, it is unlikely that this solution would prevent the golden frog from fungal disease.
