Rembrandt's Portrait
The passage introduces the following facts about the Rembrandt's Portrait of an Elderly Women in a White Bonnet; Inconsistent dressing, error in lighting, and the wood panel that the painting made on was glued together. These are not the characteristics of Rembrandt's paintings and agrees that the portrait was not his and hence removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt's paintings. However, the lecture deny's and provides evidence that the portrait was his but it was modified later on.
First, the women in the lecture says that, when the painting was X-ray scanned and analysed it came out that the black fur on the painting was added later after 100 years to increase the value of the painting of the aristocratic lady, which was marked as a inconsistency of Rembrandt's paintings because the women was wearing the white linen cap which only servants would wear and luxury fur collar that no servants could afford.
Furthermore, Rembrandt's was a master of painting light and shadow. The passage suggests that there must be partial shadow on the face if the light was illuminated from below. But the lecture counters it by saying the cloak was added after the painting was created and hence justifies the illuminance on face.
Finally, the passage suggests that the painting was made on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together, which contradicts with the nature of Rembrandt who liked to paint on the single wood. However, lecture says that several wood panels were added on the side of the paintings to make it giant. Also the lecture adds that the wood used for the painting was same as the wood used to draw his self portrait with a hat.
Although, there were problems with the paintings that suggested the painting could not be the work of Rembrandt and even the work was removed from the catalog of Rembrandt's paintings, proper analysis of the painting showed that the painting was indeed made my Rembrandt.
