Essay topics:

how does professor gives evidences that the work is Rembrandt's

The article states that one of the paintings attributed to famous Dutch painter –Rembrandt, is originally not his work. The author argues that the elements of the paintings are not consonant with the famous painter’s style and provides three reasons to support the claim. However, the professor disagrees with the author’s claim and provides further description to prove why the work is correctly attributed to Rembrandt.

Firstly, the author explains about the inconsistency in the painting. Rembrandt is generally renowned for depicting his subjects with a flair touch of detail in his painting. However, the woman in the painting wears a white cap, peculiar to a servant; meanwhile, on the other hand the woman also wears luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. This difference in inconsistency regarding the subject couldn’t be his work. Professor clarifies this discrepancy by arguing that the fur collar was added later, probably 100 years after the original painting was made, in order to increase the resale value of the painting.

Secondly, the author posits that there is no element of shadow and light in the painting, which has always been a peculiar feature of his painting. The professor claims that the painting originally had light -colored cloth which added to the illumination of the face, giving a strong impression of the shadow effect. However, addition of fur color moderated the effect.

Finally, the author implies that Rembrandt used a single whole wooden background for the painting. Woods glued together in the background made the author to believe a conjecture that the painting couldn’t have been his original work. Professor provides another evidence to reject the author’s putative thought. Professor claims that when fur collar was added, simultaneously, the wooden panel in the background was also enlarged to give a monolithic and attractive look to the paintings. Such additions were made to increase the value of the painting prior to its sale. In this way, providing enough evidences, the professor implies that the painting is originally Rembrandt’s work.
