Smart cars

Essay topics:

Smart cars

The reading and lecture both discuss about smart cars which are controlled by advanced technology. The writer provides three theories to encourage people to use smart cars. However, the professor casts doubt on the three theories with many reasons.
In the first theory mentioned in the reading, smart cars will positively reduce the quantity of accidents happening during last few decades. This results from the fact that smart cars are equipped with adequate technology which help them exactly detect cars and other barriers in their route. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this theory. She argues that the high technology still possibly makes some mistakes. If the mistake happens to some cars at the same time, the accident may even be worse than the accident made by people.
Regarding to the second theory stated in the reading, the wide use of smart cars will solve traffic problems. For example, cars driven by intelligent computer will always run at the high speed so it will reduce the total of time travel of cars on the road. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with this theory. She points out that if people start to use smart cars, the quantity of cars on the road will increase dramatically. She means that if the road is too crowded, the car owners will not take any advantages of high technology because the cars have to run at low speed.
Finally, the author suggests that smart cars will help the owner save money because they do not need to maintain expensive items such as brakes, tires usually. The lecturer again refutes this theory by arguing that smart cars require smart computer systems to operate efficiently. The professor concludes that the money used to pay for the maintenance of the advanced technology is much higher than mechanical items.
